Many many many assignments were due this week and so sleep came second to those demands. I tell you though, hard work pays off. Only two weeks left until presentations and I'll be done with yet another quarter. I'm in the 24th mile of my metaphoric marathon. I just have to keep running. I know I can do it and I'm going to give it my all.<br />
<br />
Here's the scanned assignment my design partner and I stayed up doing till 4 and 5 am this week for our Senior Healthcare studio. I did the perspectives and my partner did the elevations. <br />

It's been hard going back to school and put as much effort there as much as keeping it up at home. It's definitely not easy and requires a lot of work. This is the first step to receiving the recognition of hard work in my education prior to actually graduating.  I know I couldn't have done it if my family wasn't so patient with me and many others who have helped me through this journey. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Almost there! 16 weeks until I'm homework free!</p>

To fill in and catch up a little bit, I'll start back from my last post. Almost a month after my first business trip, I quit my job. I had quit going to school and put a hold on my dream of getting a bachelor's degree in interior design. Thanks to my husband getting a promotion at his job, I took a good solid break from it all and enjoyed a summer with my girls. </div>

<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">As the summer got closer to ending, I figured I was ready to finish what I started and got registered for the Summer session (starting in August) at the Art Institute. It was refreshing and exciting to get back to school. I even won the People's Choice Award on my residential studio project.</span><br />

It was during this quarter that I took my Lighting Design course and had an amazing teacher that lead me to the job I have now at Lightform Lighting in Phoenix! I never knew (even after taking the class) that lighting could be so complicated! Thank goodness for lighting designers! I'm glad I have my interior design background to help me in this job and I'm enjoying the people I work with, even the dog.<br />

The Fall Quarter lead me into Sustainability and Hospitality Design as my favorite classes. The classes were taught together that we were able to create a LEED project for our Hospitality Design. I found it interesting enough that I've set the goal to become LEED accredited! I'll be taking the test within the next month or so.<br />

Life is busy all around, but it's a good busy and we're moving forward. I've started my senior project which will take 9 months to complete. Only 6 more months till graduation!<br />

Oh my aching feet! I can't believe how much fun it is to go to the HD Expo! This was my first Design convention and I had a blast! We left early in the morning Wednesday via airplane to Vegas and returned late at night Thursday. Everything in between was spent walking the floors at the show. I wish I could have taken a pictures of every amazing product I was inspired by, but I don't think my phone had enough memory to hold it all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Both nights we were there we were privileged to attend parties held at the Mix which is a bar/restaurant at the top of The Hotel @ Mandalay Bay. Sixty four stories up in the air gets you a beautiful view of the Strip! The picture in the middle was a ceiling feature that was about 30-40 ft in diameter and about 25 ft high in the restaurant space. The picture of the red blob at the bottom was a structural feature behind the bar that took my breath away. <br />

One thing about conventions is that everyone gives away free stuff. I came home with so many new bags, I don't think I'll need one for a while. No worries, this mom with put them to good use :)</div>

I'm glad I got to go this year. It was definitely a lot to take in and I didn't even get to every vendor! I could get used to trips like this :)Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-89593126903923878452013-03-07T17:30:00.000-08:002013-03-07T17:30:24.206-08:00Candy popcorn<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Candy popcorn is one of my favorite childhood memories. My mom made it a rainy day tradition, so growing up in Arizona, it didn't happen all too often. I will always remember the taste of a candy coated wooden spoon and the crunch of the half popped, candy coated kernels. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I've had some family members nagging me for the recipe, so here it is! Sorry it took so long :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Candy Popcorn</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ingredients:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 cups of popcorn kernels popped in an air popper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 cups sugar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/4 cup water</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 tbsp butter</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 tsp vanilla (I always add more, but here's a good start)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
food coloring</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 1:</span> Pop the popcorn and cool in a large bowl. (Traditionally we used metal. Perhaps because it will help with Step 5.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 2:</span> Combine sugar, water, butter, and vanilla and bring to a boil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 3:</span> Continue boiling the mixture till you develop a string dripping from your stirring utensil. (Tradition states it must be a wooden spoon) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXRZzK3grFi9Vu1lQO2y9S5qyhVY5VSBJFGfvJjMbR32U_4UpB8uN_g_CvHWSHKcnOarUGzGLEFZfa72A0bQwgLejhReOCRDaw9LlOHwr8alkV8zeP3hg0NhHVhQ7ItthuWDVvtMBs3WKo/s1600/20130125_190908.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXRZzK3grFi9Vu1lQO2y9S5qyhVY5VSBJFGfvJjMbR32U_4UpB8uN_g_CvHWSHKcnOarUGzGLEFZfa72A0bQwgLejhReOCRDaw9LlOHwr8alkV8zeP3hg0NhHVhQ7ItthuWDVvtMBs3WKo/s640/20130125_190908.jpg" /> </a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 4:</span> Add food coloring to your preference.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 5:</span> Pour the mixture over the popcorn and stir like crazy. The best way seems to be plunging down at the furthest edge and digging towards yourself as you turn the bowl with each plunge. You'll have to stir for a couple of minutes before the mixture cools and dries. If it doesn't dry, you didn't boil it for long enough. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was lucky to find one that would fit into the trunk of my 10 year old Mitsubishi, so I brought home my new find. It sat in my trunk for a while as I contemplated all the possibilities and potential for this crate to be something useful and creative. Could it be a wall shelf, an herb garden, a nice piece of wall art? My head was whirling. <br />
<br />
As I was watching TV with my family one day, I was wanting an ottoman really bad to put my feet on. We recently moved into a small townhome, so what I needed had to fit certain dimensions of our tiny family room. Low and behold, the crate was the exact dimension I was looking for. I hopped over to my favorite store, Home Depot, and bought four legs and black gloss spray paint. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmcuqx5ThtYHdzr1ML6vDxeexRKegdxJfPn0R0RVm5skpA9IU642QjPoCv2oInC6divXzpzHnveC3C2O6SZ53RqD5vcywuhYODkxKTi7xOX6kTILQ35bl2da8K8Xy5Rywv23HfH9sFzCc/s1600/photo.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmcuqx5ThtYHdzr1ML6vDxeexRKegdxJfPn0R0RVm5skpA9IU642QjPoCv2oInC6divXzpzHnveC3C2O6SZ53RqD5vcywuhYODkxKTi7xOX6kTILQ35bl2da8K8Xy5Rywv23HfH9sFzCc/s320/photo.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I went to town on that crate then realized I can have an upholstered top on it easily. I tried out a new store (to me) called Mesa Sales for the upholstery foam. Best prices in town, I tell you and they cut to size! I was also able to find the fabric I wanted at Home Goods. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjycCPE2B9kIvh-ty_6UotSrPDan-eOrFOO1JBL5jJ63T89H8a7QTBBTIPUHbE8LS1cZnGUmwwESDDBS5M8FhJCxLY5l4p8FQF6UNQRUEGTwyqPnwMvIkpNCo602nST9C89DsgV6Td1U8z7/s1600/IMG_5772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjycCPE2B9kIvh-ty_6UotSrPDan-eOrFOO1JBL5jJ63T89H8a7QTBBTIPUHbE8LS1cZnGUmwwESDDBS5M8FhJCxLY5l4p8FQF6UNQRUEGTwyqPnwMvIkpNCo602nST9C89DsgV6Td1U8z7/s640/IMG_5772.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm so happy with the results, as long as I can keep my husband from putting his shoes on the top. This project has helped me embrace the industrial look of design in my house. I'm wondering what I can think up next.</div>

HGTV makes design look easy! Well, it's not, but it is so rewarding in the end! I had the pleasure of being the designer on an independent home design project. I got this contact from our mortgage broker. She called me and said, "I've never had a designer to refer to someone, but I have a client who has been in his house for 2 months and is ready for it to feel like a home." That was the beginning of my first independent professional journey into the industry of interior design. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My client is an older gentleman who is single and lives in South Chandler in a 4 bedroom home. While he has a full time job in the south west valley, he wanted a home he could come to at the end of the day and feel warm, welcome, and comforting. He needed help hanging artwork and accessorizing, but through our visit, it turned into painting, back splashes, draperies and more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had recently met, through our house search, Mark and Debbie Barber with Barber Contracting, LLC. They had come to a house my husband and I were looking at to give us an estimate on remodeling a "fixer-upper." As I walked through my client's house, I immediately thought of them and got them on board. Here are pictures of the final product. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this photo, you'll see the window treatments we added by the dining area table to match the rest of the shutters in the house. We also added cellular blinds so we didn't have to block the beautiful backyard view. We also added the bamboo roller shades on the patio doors, the pot rack, bar stools, and a little paint accent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This photo is to the left of the last photo. I designed this tile install as the Barbers worked so hard to make it just right. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a close up on the tile back splash I also helped with the design. I've always wondered why back splash is so hard for designers to do on Next Design Star, now I know. Cutting, spacing, drying, grout, it just takes way too long. But this design looks great! It only took 4 Home Depots to get the right tile patterns in the quantities I needed.</div>
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinvPODVBPRuaw2sY5DvwoRT_AvyXy1tjvJsNsd7Abh8Q8up2UQmO-cOGkgZbstd7TXeu09mOkFpIqqq757Z_sxVrhsiZW1h_Qd4wtqXK3MGPM0NnoSfAzM0-lfz26OCyxmYOshYvfOJY4t/s1600/IMG_5511.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinvPODVBPRuaw2sY5DvwoRT_AvyXy1tjvJsNsd7Abh8Q8up2UQmO-cOGkgZbstd7TXeu09mOkFpIqqq757Z_sxVrhsiZW1h_Qd4wtqXK3MGPM0NnoSfAzM0-lfz26OCyxmYOshYvfOJY4t/s640/IMG_5511.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This room was given a paint treatment and a chair rail. Once the artwork was hung and small furniture put in place, it really felt complete, warm and inviting in here.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This space didn't have much in it before, so we decided to make it a nice rest area with a paint accent, console table and greenery. The accessories are from the owner to help give it a personal touch.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before, this window only had sheers. I found a great contact, Cindy Bluth, who sews custom draperies. I'm really glad to have met her. I know I'll be using her in the future as well. She also pointed me to my new favorite fabric store, Home Fabrics on Stapley south of the US-60.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This master bath was lacking rugs and needed new window treatments that had more of a masculine touch. The previous drapes were fluffy, flowery, and huge dust collectors. We replaced them with these bamboo roller shades, inside mounted which really performs well in places susceptible to moisture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Welcome to our first House 2 Home spotlight. I'm so excited to show you how amazing my uncle's home in Utah is. He's really great at leaving personal touches in architectural details and my aunt is really great and making the whole house look so cute. <br />
<br />
One thing you should notice about the front of their house is the archway above their front door. If you look closely, you'll notice the letter "V" above the arch. I've seen him do this in other places which shows he's proud to be a Vance. Much like what Thomas Kinkade does with his pictures when he hides a letter "N" for his wife's first initial. Look it up! It's fun to look for.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you walk to the front door, the pathway you walk on is very rough and organic feeling with it's textured cement treatment. I've also figured it is required of every Utah resident in the area to have a gorgeous display of flowers in your yard. This home is no different.</div>

I know this might seem like an out of place picture to this post, but I wanted to use it to show just how much thought and work my uncle puts into his home. Have you ever thought about your ceiling being something wonderful to look at? If you look close (there is a closer image next) he's treated his ceiling in no other way I've ever seen. I asked him how he did it. There is a brush sold in hardware stores with the bristles spread out in this way. As he was preparing to texture the ceiling, he dipped the brush in the texture then scraped it flat. Once that was dried, he painted the ceiling with wall paint mixed at 25% what the room was and spread it on the ceiling. Caution: the way you treat your ceiling could have a profound effect on your acoustics in the room. However, this had no problem or strange effects that would deter you from it's beauty. (I'm quirky about it, I know.)</div>

Here's a cool idea. Ever hate that feeling of needing to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but dread turning on the light for fear of burning your eyes right out of their sockets? Why not install lights under your counter? This soft glow will surely keep that sleep in your eyes while you find your midnight relief. I can't remember what material he used for the countertop, but in the commercial design world, there is a material called 3-Form that can be treated the same way.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And if your bathroom is too far to go in the night, install some crown molding with lighting above!</div>

As a mom, this has to be my favorite personalized feature of the house. This pantry door closes flush with the wall and looks like it's not even there. The facade of it holds two sizable cupboards for spices, seasonings and baking goods. When the pantry door is opened, a motion sensor detects it and turns on the light. BRILLIANT!</div>

Everyone wants to be in this kitchen. I'm sure I would enjoy doing dishes more here than at my house with a deep apron sink and a 2 drawer dishwasher that can be run with both or just one of the drawers at a time! You can't see the microwave drawer very well, but it's there and it rocks!</div>

I was in this area of Utah for less than 24 hours, but managed to see quite a bit of beautiful scenery. It was great seeing family in their homes instead of waiting for them to come to Arizona. Had it not been so cold and windy while we were there, I'm sure I would have spent more time on their back balcony over looking this view of the valley.</div>

However, with change comes new beginnings. My husband starts a new job today, I'm completing my 6th quarter of school (and ready for summer break). My oldest daughter is preparing herself for 3rd grade. My youngest daughter is finally potty trained! Oh, and did I mention a new season of Design Star has started? Of course I'm rooting for the Arizona contestant and not just because I'm from Arizona. Yes, I'm sure I'll be talking about it every week.<br />

I also wanted to take a moment to prepare you for my upcoming series on the blog called<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>House 2 Home </b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I got this idea from Apartment Therapy's House Tours, but I like to add my own rendition. This series will feature homes that I've visited that have creative uses of space and decor. Little punches of personality can really change a space from feeling like a house to a home. (Get it?)<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
{B}'s room was redone and my 3 yr old {T}'s room was neglected. So I decided I had some materials on hand to at least get a start on what I wanted to have happen in her room. </div>
<br />
<br />
I started with a lamp I had that I ripped the shade off. The prior shade was all white, but had a bright pink lining which made everything look pink when I turned it on. So I kept the wire frame for it and tied some spare ribbon I had in "tutu" fashion around. I mixed up the color and texture to give it some contrast and stand out from the white base a little more. The next part was some wall art. One of the great perks of going to design school is the Resource room they have for the Interior Design students. We just got in this HUGE amount of wall paper books so I get to bring home some discontinued samples and play around with them however I like. So I attached some to foam core and made some instant wall art for the room.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My in-laws were so generous to give us a twin bed. It had an old cream vinyl like material upholstery on it so I decided to cover it, first with batting to give it some of that comfortable look and then with this fun geometric graphic I found at Hobby Lobby. Where would I be without a staple gun? I'm just to scared to imagine. The bed set came from Target and the curtains (which you can't see very well cuz they will be soon replaced) I sewed from clearance fabric at <a href="http://www.countrycurtains.com/" target="_blank">Country Curtains</a>.</div>

So just this little corner is done for now, but the plans are to make the other side of the room toy and dress up storage. My {T} loves to pretend so here's where it's going to get fun. You'll have to wait and see until I'm done with it. </div>

I get to spend it at school. (*yeah*) While I have some down time, I'd like to share some inspiring spaces I've found that are "American" inspired.<br />

So Happy President's Day everyone! I hope you got to enjoy a day off!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-53891434766550176112012-01-26T11:05:00.000-08:002012-01-27T08:59:03.096-08:00From Plain to Dame!Week 3 of 11 this quarter and the homework is piling on! I'm glad I go this done before the real swarm of design homework projects began. This quarter has a full blown holistic day spa design (start to finish), learning all about building codes, how to make pretty presentations, and learning a whole new computer design program. My career as a designer is becoming more real and I feel like my talents are growing! <br />
<br />
To keep my sanity, I must have something completely under my control at home that I can call mine and work on when I want to. So, here's another of my fabulous garage finds I found recently. I got this two drawer nightstand along with a coffee table (not completed yet). The top drawer originally looked like the bottom one, but I was experimenting with the Pottery Barn Finish you can see applied <a href="http://momvsdesignschool.blogspot.com/2012/01/pottery-barn-finish-adventures.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHSCVoIjcs85F2jm55K64mVO35sWDDeeyPVuSRCrcoQVeJsFtrPbbrCaKBvnBg0hUltNNX_w0a-HzM9hFKVFiB_7usEyXwJNGkUc-OIHjdGV2uPERjdGLIPTPMxzQP7OyHNZMY7icYZD9F/s1600/IMG_3030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHSCVoIjcs85F2jm55K64mVO35sWDDeeyPVuSRCrcoQVeJsFtrPbbrCaKBvnBg0hUltNNX_w0a-HzM9hFKVFiB_7usEyXwJNGkUc-OIHjdGV2uPERjdGLIPTPMxzQP7OyHNZMY7icYZD9F/s400/IMG_3030.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So it started out looking like a "plain jane" nightstand you can find at any Target for cheap and I thought I would dress it up a bit. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNwHWEdrAHS0d4JGuae2pd7Gd9kfIorCn7y6mxD4z59J5__c1uSkvW1tN1m4Vr3O1dpl2sVRFv-q1A8f6d2SdCno4062rv1WgzQWxML_EV_9F7O0D-h5Mlz6fx45IdQnkAm1U456h5pNc/s1600/IMG_3031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNwHWEdrAHS0d4JGuae2pd7Gd9kfIorCn7y6mxD4z59J5__c1uSkvW1tN1m4Vr3O1dpl2sVRFv-q1A8f6d2SdCno4062rv1WgzQWxML_EV_9F7O0D-h5Mlz6fx45IdQnkAm1U456h5pNc/s400/IMG_3031.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I went to Al's Hardware and Materials out in AJ and picked up some pretty sweet trim and base boards for $10. I got to use my air compressor and miter box (cuz I'm too cheap to by a miter saw) I got for Christmas! This is exactly the project I had in mind when I asked for them :)<br />

So am I . . . kind of. With my busy schedule it's hard to keep any kind of consistency with my 3 year old. Last week for example, we were home all day Tuesday and she wore panties all day, and went potty in the toilet twice. The next day, I had school and she insisted on wearing panties to Grandma's house (my mother in law). With hesitation, I went along with it as I packed extra clothes "just in case." When I came home that night, my husband, who picks up the kids on the way home from work, announced that she pooped in her panties while she was at Grandma's to which the voice in my head does a very loud "GRRR!" <br />
<br />
I've never really had success in potty training kids. My now 7 year old was trained by a co-day care worker. I went to work at a day care with my daughter in tow when she was almost 3. Any attempts before that were met with the same frustration. In fact, my oldest attempted flushing her clothes down the toilet succeeding with my favorite green shirt with a felt butterfly appliquéd on the front. Luckily the denim shorts didn't make it.<br />
<br />
So inspiration hit me today in the form of a creative outlet. Kids like to see their reward and know how to get it so I created some bathroom decor for my 3 year old to find more motivation.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ingredients (aka supplies):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2x4 cut to about 7 inches</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
sandpaper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
drill</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
paint</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
fabric mod podge</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
fabric cut to 3x7</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
stencil</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
double stick tape</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
sponge brush</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
suckers (I chose dum dums because they are smaller and it doesn't take her forever to finish them)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After cutting and sanding your block. Drill holes in the top. It's fun to do it at different angles, just make sure the holes don't run into each other. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paint your block. (I spray painted)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Apply the fabric mod podge to face of block, put your fabric on, let it dry, then seal it with the mod podge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Create a stencil by finding a font you like, print it out and exacto knife the pieces. Adhere it to the block with double stick tape, even the middle of the p's and o's. Or if you have one, just cut vinyl for it, but I feel the stencil makes it look more handmade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFrAHWfWTyVVHs7zQ8R1UrFDaukBiQ6UkC-kyk7K24kKmRPFgJvBedH9Vj-TXNhUDvSjBbITmDWueRUJ7MBfwW5VO8RN2bmbXGFz0FDRUpojtaLYM0cxtaZtqk9c6CfcksZprC7r7inff_/s1600/IMG_3063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFrAHWfWTyVVHs7zQ8R1UrFDaukBiQ6UkC-kyk7K24kKmRPFgJvBedH9Vj-TXNhUDvSjBbITmDWueRUJ7MBfwW5VO8RN2bmbXGFz0FDRUpojtaLYM0cxtaZtqk9c6CfcksZprC7r7inff_/s640/IMG_3063.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Yes, this is what I'm doing instead of homework. . . again.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once it's dry, it's ready for display. Now cross our fingers that it works! PS I don't recommend putting this on the counter where little hands can reach on their own. Find a nice display shelf to put in your bathroom and place it on there.</div>

I've always wanted to do an nice satin-y Pottery Barn finish on furniture, but I've been waiting for the right opportunity to do it. My best friend picked up a couple of dressers from a neighbor for $50 combined! Awesome deal right?! She brought them to me and specifically asked for the Pottery Barn finish she heard about from her mom who is a "Pin-head". I knew exactly what she was talking about since I had pinned the same web site on how to do this particular finish. Here's the awesome site I went to at <a href="http://justagirlblog.com/2009/10/how-to-paint-furniture.html" target="_blank">Just a Girl</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My adventure began shopping for the Benjamin Moore paint which apparently can only be found at Ace Hardware out here. Unfortunately, they don't sell this product anymore, then I realized the posted tutorial was over 2 years ago! So I decided to improvise. The four things that stick out to me that makes this paint amazing is LATEX, LOW LUSTER, INTERIOR, and ENAMEL. So I headed back to Home Depot (my personal go to) and searched for the next best thing and found my SUPERSTARS for the project.</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> After!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Things I would do next time:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- Tint the primer! I could have saved doing 3 coats of black if the primer wasn't white. Although I got away with one quart each for the whole project, tinted primer would have been a time saver.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- I would have stuck with 2 hole handles as opposed to going to one. The hardware was supplied for me by my BFF so I made it work the best I could. I <u>love</u> the knobs, but the holes left behind are always hard to completely eliminate. If I every perfect this trick, I'll definitely let you know.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Tips I will stick with:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- <u>Use a foam roller and foam brushes.</u> It really helped with keeping the coats even and consistent. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- <u>Use a strong degreaser to prep the wood.</u> Definitely stick with this if you're not going to sand a piece before you work on it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- <u>Make sure your paint is drying in a room with the right temperature and for the appropriate time.</u> It didn't happen on this project, but it's always a good tip to stick with. Every paint can has suggested room temperatures and dry times. As long as you stick with them you won't run into problems that will make you have to back track on your project.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Good luck if this motivates you enough to do it on your furniture. Send me a message if you have and questions or send me pics of your finished product!</div>

It seems like every winter I get sick enough to put me out for a few days. I was able to make it through finals this year, but then I crashed for the following weekend to charge my batteries for the Christmas rush. <br />
<br />
During December, our heat went out . . . 3 times. Though the experience was rough, we found the A/C company we'll be using for the rest of our life. The first time they came out, they worked on our unit until 9 pm so that we would have a warm night. Good customer service goes a long way. Other than dipping into our Christmas budget for house repairs, we still were happy to spend time with our family. <br />
<br />
School has started for me once again. On the docket is: Design Development Commercial, Codes (...yeah...), Revit, and Visual Presentation. On the first day of school, I finally received news about an internship I interviewed for nearly 6 weeks ago. They don't need me :( Oh well, the position wasn't something they were advertising and they were considering fitting me in and finding what duties I would have. I guess it doesn't work out right now, but there is always other places.<br />
<br />
What would my dream job be? I would love to work as an interior designer for an architectural firm that builds custom homes. I grew up in a custom home and I loved how different it was from everyones. I like going into a house and having someone show me around instead of instantly knowing where all the bathrooms and bedrooms are located. I like to be surprised! <br />
<br />
Along with my dream, I would create the layout of my own custom home. I would love to have near complete control over what goes into my home down to the tiny details from outlets and harware to ceiling heights and elevations.<br />
<br />
I'm getting closer to my dream, one quarter at a time. Although I've received my first rejection, I still feel like the world is my oyster and that I will still be able to accomplish great things in my life. Resumes went out again yesterday with hope for success. As for now, I'm happy working in my garage creating beautiful furniture. <br />
<br />
Here's to Winter 2012!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-45080892452248888332012-01-03T09:35:00.000-08:002012-01-24T18:38:36.871-08:00Chevron coffee table<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm so glad to be working on projects again until school starts next week. Here's the first to be finished although there are about 8 more pieces in my garage to work on. </div>

Making chevrons, I found, is a mathematical dream. It's all about midpoints and right angles. So get out your T-square, your 30-60-90 triangle, measuring tape, and pencil. You'll be needing them to recreate this vintage look.</div>

I've entered a giveaway with <a href="http://www.allthingsthrifty.com/" target="_blank">All Things Thrifty</a> girl, Brooke, but I have only about 10 entries in over 4,000. Chances are slim, but here's to hoping! This could really help me get a home business going and help me get through school :)</div>

PS Blogging about this wasn't a part of winning, I just REALLY want one. Just thought I'd share.</div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-49159850827017150882011-12-24T10:06:00.000-08:002012-01-02T18:40:37.658-08:00Mason jar pin cushion<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My husband's family does a name exchange for Christmas and I got his Aunt who I don't know as well as I probably should. After a few phone calls and conversations with my mother in law, I got to know Aunt Mara pretty well (I know she doesn't follow blogs so I'm safe in posting this). She likes to craft and at a recent craft night, my m-i-l noticed Mara was still using the store container she got when she purchased her straight pins. Enter me, the problem solver! I immediately thought of this wonderfully easy craft. I'm sure there are many others like this on the internet, but I didn't look at a single one! Once I get a clear vision of what to do, there is no stopping me. So here's how I did it:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ingredients (aka supplies):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mason jar with 2-piece lid (any size works, but I had these cute squatty ones on hand)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
about 1 sq ft of cute fabric</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
stuffing (the more you have, the tighter your cushion will be)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
magnets</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
hot glue</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ey8L6SUFBcjnX1hGh1y5P_ujBvvoMP2k-Mc3cRfxExqVWXX4Nb3Qpr_TTmxpYsDVnMopkRTbvSb5CUougYhYNRGyo2fB1YnP6GCDZEXR2kZ7nuTfpfnTro27CXqqTO05mw4_pYbdhmSV/s1600/IMG_2710.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ey8L6SUFBcjnX1hGh1y5P_ujBvvoMP2k-Mc3cRfxExqVWXX4Nb3Qpr_TTmxpYsDVnMopkRTbvSb5CUougYhYNRGyo2fB1YnP6GCDZEXR2kZ7nuTfpfnTro27CXqqTO05mw4_pYbdhmSV/s400/IMG_2710.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So, to get started, cut out your fabric about an 1" larger than your flat piece of the lid. Next, put glue on the flat lid piece in about 1" sections and fold your fabric up and over. <b>NOTE</b>: You don't want to use too much hot glue because it will be hard to put your lid on when it's done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiscc4Vc3crS2PUPV3mHgcx_-jGhk9_3uOjhl710CUJuN87E97IIQR9vmRcYGxSS_a74TmM8wWjOI2kcmBHXCHZwfSYu12Hl2-LQwQRq_Weol8OCafNkbnq68OAX4uJ1i8ucRuiVpr4ARxE/s1600/IMG_2711.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiscc4Vc3crS2PUPV3mHgcx_-jGhk9_3uOjhl710CUJuN87E97IIQR9vmRcYGxSS_a74TmM8wWjOI2kcmBHXCHZwfSYu12Hl2-LQwQRq_Weol8OCafNkbnq68OAX4uJ1i8ucRuiVpr4ARxE/s400/IMG_2711.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Before finishing off the lid, put your stuffing in as full as you'd like. I like'd mine to be pretty tight so that there wouldn't be any sliding around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCT_PdjmMGk606dE-NFh1kCpqHjd1lVjt7T_1633_rm86YzyQ5YH3OWnr_xGRlmFHunfncfEan_uV5NDJDYUQ7PLeq1gB4KAAO-oDHMDSNb5nEAIs-v_u5CzzJdWXp3kbnvA9rAC6I-a3S/s1600/IMG_2712.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCT_PdjmMGk606dE-NFh1kCpqHjd1lVjt7T_1633_rm86YzyQ5YH3OWnr_xGRlmFHunfncfEan_uV5NDJDYUQ7PLeq1gB4KAAO-oDHMDSNb5nEAIs-v_u5CzzJdWXp3kbnvA9rAC6I-a3S/s400/IMG_2712.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Once your fabric is glued on, cut off any excess so it doesn't bunch. Now you can add your magnets. I used about 4 in the empty space between the ends of the fabric underneath the lid. To hide the magnets, cut another circle out of your fabric and hot glue it on the bottom. Again, don't use too much hot glue or your lid won't screw on properly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdYYAVRS5SYOgNCKCKEh2Z9kLB0AGMaUwLC-r2BKKAyoApW3LFmlHHXtzuVQO5y01NBFX9pSBqe0YyQbmxIHmxDdoa25obNY2VlZXxDikgzTa-bQL_3XRsgpS1AkFkiZwkUvrRBhai12-b/s1600/IMG_2713.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdYYAVRS5SYOgNCKCKEh2Z9kLB0AGMaUwLC-r2BKKAyoApW3LFmlHHXtzuVQO5y01NBFX9pSBqe0YyQbmxIHmxDdoa25obNY2VlZXxDikgzTa-bQL_3XRsgpS1AkFkiZwkUvrRBhai12-b/s400/IMG_2713.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's your finished product!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUc2K8m-mjS7px_uo0d3_yWxMb8dmmLyGYibSGaW6KvqGCC9AcfdsSI-ss1iwNQCx9rHj_lbOCXcfj_SV0m4mAPBZALoWq15Mkyq_e4CB8v-RIIBE9jRODYy17OD2Rss5Yb8tl3ZxMJPt_/s1600/IMG_2714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUc2K8m-mjS7px_uo0d3_yWxMb8dmmLyGYibSGaW6KvqGCC9AcfdsSI-ss1iwNQCx9rHj_lbOCXcfj_SV0m4mAPBZALoWq15Mkyq_e4CB8v-RIIBE9jRODYy17OD2Rss5Yb8tl3ZxMJPt_/s400/IMG_2714.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just fill it with straight pins and you are good to go.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Hopefully, if you're following this, you know that when I craft I like to make it as quick and easy as possible. I take a lot of time when it comes to furniture, but crafts like this take very few minutes and solve hours of problems. I hope you spend your time wisely this Christmas season and enjoy every minute with your family and loved ones!</div>

I've never really found one that I've fallen in love with. I finished up school this last week and I finally found the time to think about taking care of that lonely, empty wreath hook on my front door. As I was trying to convince myself to set a budget on what to spend on a wreath, I realized I had everything I needed for one already and it would only take me a few short minutes to put together. Here's what I did:<br />
<br />
I have this garland that I picked up from Home Depot last year after Christmas for 75% off (total $3).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOjVAZSpfsTTnWFJ1NBNPhEOZNzf5bgfz3z_CY50sHACCC7KJhrqc1B8FBwFHaFZa4k-8hixKgZN0aez9J62EiI84bySJdhBtZILrU0WtnlnnCuM6JuCn4su57T49SCKnqphWs4avc0T06/s1600/IMG_2662.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOjVAZSpfsTTnWFJ1NBNPhEOZNzf5bgfz3z_CY50sHACCC7KJhrqc1B8FBwFHaFZa4k-8hixKgZN0aez9J62EiI84bySJdhBtZILrU0WtnlnnCuM6JuCn4su57T49SCKnqphWs4avc0T06/s320/IMG_2662.JPG" width="253" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wrapped it up in a circle. Voila! Not done . . .</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6xIBDepm7iEXPW9CnDhdynD82Hr1R_1-LT3hBt1o-OALEYH57hLT3sM8G4p2TOrdphbmhTMb8_W9c3NeSUDNEPAUx2qOojtxWdvzDhuRoHw7MVQ6J0ZQYHyBdczETzjaa3vuMaWGhr_Vy/s1600/IMG_2664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6xIBDepm7iEXPW9CnDhdynD82Hr1R_1-LT3hBt1o-OALEYH57hLT3sM8G4p2TOrdphbmhTMb8_W9c3NeSUDNEPAUx2qOojtxWdvzDhuRoHw7MVQ6J0ZQYHyBdczETzjaa3vuMaWGhr_Vy/s400/IMG_2664.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I discontinued these garlands from my christmas tree and they've just been sitting in storage, but together they create the perfect candy cane pattern.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNChFdQvbOqX-yw7DMSjNyILTf2Ro80wm728NgtYIJfMHjweHnnQwj5fybDE19Ktzh0JEJqYbBBdot5il9yV22VNtAFs-WqbOMXfA6cZVJrLZkXV2AnoTu98ZKrW0ZQvSnISeH8C3jHP-R/s1600/IMG_2665.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNChFdQvbOqX-yw7DMSjNyILTf2Ro80wm728NgtYIJfMHjweHnnQwj5fybDE19Ktzh0JEJqYbBBdot5il9yV22VNtAFs-WqbOMXfA6cZVJrLZkXV2AnoTu98ZKrW0ZQvSnISeH8C3jHP-R/s320/IMG_2665.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wrap them around the wreath . . .</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5WQW7AwjfBgWoR8T5HKkZy0fCNyLt7EIe2TgrCr5SigiqI7yG5rIXVnVSDwA6SaUx922Yx2UbrPw67C6T18knRJfNawk6ryriX0o1uJ8ixxjjVe_XWNibR-4tO98gRVbMVQUQK34dV2hZ/s1600/IMG_2666.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5WQW7AwjfBgWoR8T5HKkZy0fCNyLt7EIe2TgrCr5SigiqI7yG5rIXVnVSDwA6SaUx922Yx2UbrPw67C6T18knRJfNawk6ryriX0o1uJ8ixxjjVe_XWNibR-4tO98gRVbMVQUQK34dV2hZ/s400/IMG_2666.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Place a nice bow on the bottom and you're done!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3k24ftETW04RmPSU2h1rjflmrWLgnqFSrlatZdqGBGHiQeTMS53l48AYmNI_p-j1YWq2ViZ-nIojGQs5wtggN_i4LO4ZDpLYfYrKbojWVJtYjVl_d0BesZmrptmcZvdloqUmJPT5EwXIj/s1600/IMG_2668.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3k24ftETW04RmPSU2h1rjflmrWLgnqFSrlatZdqGBGHiQeTMS53l48AYmNI_p-j1YWq2ViZ-nIojGQs5wtggN_i4LO4ZDpLYfYrKbojWVJtYjVl_d0BesZmrptmcZvdloqUmJPT5EwXIj/s640/IMG_2668.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Problem solved! Seriously, 5 minutes. It doesn't get better than that. Maybe next year I'll go more elaborate, but now I feel comfort knowing that hook on the door isn't naked anymore.</div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-55364591455529766232011-12-08T15:21:00.001-08:002012-01-02T18:41:32.363-08:00Yellow + Stripes = Love<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got this wonderful piece from my neighbor after she set it out on the curb with a FREE sign on it. A black widow got to it before I did, but my husband quickly solved that problem. So it sat in my garage for about a month or two and was actually serving its storage purposes, but my husband wanted it in his office. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We decided to make his office the December project around here (which will be posted as soon as it's done) so he cleaned up his office as soon as I started sanding the shelves. Obviously I'm still a little new to blogging about my projects because I didn't think to take a before pic until the first coat of paint was already on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPgMPJxZmcFJDeiw97E88SQ6nf8Ynh502nhq9cBjRTc_gj9qYzA0MtVaZH4plec4_xQkiF76__2xP_F4-OjRu9T4Z9KSAl-nUIlj7o9_Ctk8oLTv5Mxz2dcw3nqebytkc20KUe9MmjREsE/s1600/IMG_2656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPgMPJxZmcFJDeiw97E88SQ6nf8Ynh502nhq9cBjRTc_gj9qYzA0MtVaZH4plec4_xQkiF76__2xP_F4-OjRu9T4Z9KSAl-nUIlj7o9_Ctk8oLTv5Mxz2dcw3nqebytkc20KUe9MmjREsE/s640/IMG_2656.JPG" width="566" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My hubby picked the color. I had to replace the back panel (which was really fun demo work for me :) so we came up with a cool idea of painting stripes on the back. He even helped me with the taping. Working with color is taking me out of my comfortable neutral bubble. I welcome the challenge!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagHDEnhlHHV79eLtnYO0aKE2Yl5shSCpJkRai9Wj4tVda6IZL0913TAjyqSyTOJ8iEsOp7S23gIrYVZwYftcTDJjF80LWowVcKAc27eoNzdLe3N9HXpVLbw7qnxLiTvpX7zfg5vjzOhEv/s1600/IMG_2659.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagHDEnhlHHV79eLtnYO0aKE2Yl5shSCpJkRai9Wj4tVda6IZL0913TAjyqSyTOJ8iEsOp7S23gIrYVZwYftcTDJjF80LWowVcKAc27eoNzdLe3N9HXpVLbw7qnxLiTvpX7zfg5vjzOhEv/s400/IMG_2659.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we paint the whole room (the same gray as the stripes) we'll be ready to place the furniture and accessorize. I'm so excited! Thanks again Stacey for the shelf!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One more week and I'll be one quarter closer to having my Interior Design degree! Only 8 more to go. *sigh*</div>
<br />Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11832837516254455874noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2502761227634582648.post-64746401300187278202011-11-15T11:22:00.001-08:002012-01-02T18:40:13.815-08:00What did you do with your Pumpkin seeds?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we were carving our pumpkins I was loving how pretty the texture of pumpkin seeds were. I'm not a fan of eating them but I thought they'd come in handy for a project I had brewing in my mind. I quickly gave my 7 year old the job of picking out the seeds from the pumpkin "guts" we had piled in a dish. She didn't stick with it very long since we had two fairly large pumpkins going at the same time so I got to finish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finally finished my online class last week and was able to finished a project I had started for the first time in a month. Thank goodness for "a little" time to myself again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here's the finished product of my Pumpkin Seed Topiaries. My husband thought I was nuts, but he actually approved of it's coolness and uniqueness. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBaWiA5tZ56xSePu41YK5VEo2LTus3JsgywlfX4Ihw0ypuPqIXP1xgDcNi4WQxGYRpZeWvcdSdxxLia80x9LN_CkyfEsnCaJeyh0modxFJMK6fvI3Kp0dbiwXs4aur71mNUJZS2VAHcsH6/s1600/IMG_2512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBaWiA5tZ56xSePu41YK5VEo2LTus3JsgywlfX4Ihw0ypuPqIXP1xgDcNi4WQxGYRpZeWvcdSdxxLia80x9LN_CkyfEsnCaJeyh0modxFJMK6fvI3Kp0dbiwXs4aur71mNUJZS2VAHcsH6/s400/IMG_2512.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All it takes is:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pumpkin seeds (wash, then dry, then bake them 350F for about 15 min.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Floral foam</div>

Spanish moss</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dark green spray paint</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lots of hot glue :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's all pretty self explanatory from there. Anyways, it's nice to have a list of "ingredients" to any project.</div>

Now these beauties are proudly displayed on my entry way dresser. Never underestimate the power of TEXTURE!</div>

I've promised friends I would post some of my homework on here so I took some pictures. Here's a little look into things I have to work on for hours at a time as a design student. As I'm starting my second year, I'm only finding that I get to spend more hours on my homework, but it's more directly related with my program and makes me even more excited to be an interior designer.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is from a third quarter class called Fundamentals of Drawing. The assignment was to set up a still life of seven objects with different textures. This was done in charcoal. I can tell you that before this class I was all stick figures, but now, if I really want to, I can apply more design theory into drawings.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a part of this quarter's assignments in a class called Design Development - Residential. This assignment is called a Concept Board. Sometimes on shows like Designers Challenge on HGTV (or DIY, I can't remember since we don't have cable anymore) you'll see designers with presentation boards. This is not one of them. A concept board just shows the look and feel a space is going for. None of these items will actually be seen in the place we are designing. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had to write a concept statement and find the images that would help support that statement. What do you think? Did I make it happen?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This turned out to be a fun project, also from this quarter. This is from my Image Manipulation class. I like to just call it Photoshop because that's the only application we're learning. This assignment was called the Collage Project. We were supposed to have at least 3 images and use techniques we learned about (layers, layer masking, filters, etc.) to convey a message. I'll admit, I did this when I was sick and it was a second attempt at the project. So powering through Nyquil, I started with the piano, then added a sunset. The color of the wood reminded me of fall so I added a leaf. Fall made me think of time passing so I added a clock. I created a transparent image of sheet music to tie it all together. All in all, it symbolizes the passing of time and a bit of nostalgia. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This last project made me think a lot once I got the critique back from my teacher (which was well received). My teacher asked me, "What does the piano and music have to do with this?" Some of you know that when I started college I was a music major. I lived music for 2 years straight and got as much out of it as I think I possibly could have at the time. After I graduated with an associates, my priorities changed. I got married, had kids, and now 10 years after starting down the path of music, I find myself in a place I couldn't have imagined back then. Interior design? Who would have thunk? I'm just as passionate about interior design as I was about music. It's all about creativity right? I'll never let that part of me go.</div>

I'm glad I'm where I'm at today. I've got a creative husband and two energetic kids that I love to play with. I'm looking forward to this "new day" in life and can't wait for the holidays to start! Like I said in my last post, once I'm done with my online class in two weeks, I'll have more time on my hands to craft and use that creative gene of mine.</div>

What happened to the last 30 days? Oh that's right, school started again and we ALL got sick in our house. In fact, I'm still trying to find my voice, but I'm well enough to realize that it's almost Halloween! (It sneaks up on you!)<br />

Here's a little wreath I made simply from tying ribbon around this styrofoam form. Hot glue is your friend in this project. Keep it simple! Keep it cute! I have to keep these things in mind until my online class is over in a couple of weeks. <br />
<br />
You can see this wreath and many other "Fall" wreaths on the themed link up party at <a href="http://thecsiproject.com/">The CSI Project</a>.<br />
